The Community Foundation of Jo Daviess County announced the 2021 recipients of the Sandra Zink Memorial Scholarship. The award is given to students who plan to follow in the former Galena teacher’s footsteps by pursuing the sciences or education fields. The fund is supported by a partnership between The Galena Federation of Teachers and The Community Foundation of Jo Daviess County.
Three students from Galena High School have been awarded $1,000 scholarships. This year’s recipients are Allison Garcia, Maggie Handfelt, and Nicole Johnson.
The Sandra Zink Memorial Scholarship honors Ms. Zink’s dedication and commitment to teaching the Sciences at the Galena High School and her years of dedicated service, helping her students not only in the Sciences but also in their everyday lives. Ms. Zink loved and helped her students in and out of the classroom.
The Galena Federation of Teachers has partnered with the Community Foundation to support the scholarship.
“We are proud to honor Ms. Zink through a scholarship that carries on her love for helping students” said Federation Treasurer, Mary Calfee.
A $5,000 gift to the Community Foundation of Jo Daviess County from an anonymous donor helped launch the fund which was then matched by donations from community members to honor Ms. Zink. The fund provides scholarships to students graduating from Galena Highschool with an interest in pursuing the sciences or education fields.
“We hope the community will join us in celebrating Ms. Zink’s love of teaching and her students by making a gift to The Sandra Zink Memorial Scholarship”, said Eric Dregne, Community Foundation President.
Memorial gifts can be made online on the Community Foundation website at www.cfjodaviess.com or by mailing a check to: Community Foundation of Jo Daviess County, P.O. Box 77, Elizabeth, IL 61028.
